20+ Affordable Gifts for the Hikers in Your Life
Updated: Mar 18, 2023
The holidays are right around the corner and if you are anything like me, you’ve been procrastinating. I dread shopping for others, what if something doesn’t fit, it’s not the color they like, or they don’t like it?
To make it a little easier, when I am deciding what to give someone I make a list of their favorite things, like hobbies, sports, color, food, etc. This really helps me narrow down what I should get. If you try this out and hiking is listed as a hobby, you’ve come to the right place!
Below is a list of 15+ hiking gifts, from life saving items to fun items.
Pyro Putty - This stuff is perfect assistance for starting a fire almost anywhere. A little bit of Pyro Putty can burn for several minutes, giving hikers enough time to start a fire and get warm. A single container of Pyro Putty can last for about 20 fires, making it a cost-effective option for hikers. Linked is their winter blend, which is made for colder weather. Check out this site to learn how else you can use the putty!
Life Straw - Life straw is a great gift for someone who enjoys day hikes or backpacking. You can put this straw directly into running water and drink from it. The filter in it will keep out bacteria, dirt, parasites, and more. You even have the option of purchasing a water bottle. I have a blue water bottle I bring with me every hike!
Bug Bite Thing - The Bug Bite Thing is used to painlessly remove toxins from under the skin after you get a bug bite. You place the suction cup over the bite and pull up. Perfect for all your 'sweet' friends and family who are out hiking in nature.
Head Lamp - You never know what can happen when you are out hiking on the trail. I have ended up in the dark on more than one occasion. For that reason I absolutely recommend a head lamp. I prefer a head lamp over a flashlight, purely for the fact that it keeps my hands free.
Flashlight - Even if you carry a head lamp while you hike, packing a flashlight as a back-up is a good idea. You have more control over what you look at with a flashlight, where the head lamp only moves with your head.
Compass - What would happen if your phone dies and you didn't bring a trail map? This is why a compass is an important tool to bring with you! There are a ton of types to choose from. The Silva Ranger Global US Compass is high performance and made specifically for people who enjoy the outdoors.
Emergency Blanket - Weather changes are a common thing while hiking. The temperatures will also fluctuate as you climb higher or descend. This waterproof and weatherproof blanket reflects your body heat to keep you warm. The best part is how light they are to pack and how affordable they are!
Storm Proof Matches - Use these matches to start up a fire, even in inclement weather. Rain, wind, and snow are no match (look I'm puny). Each box comes with 25 matches that burn for about 15 seconds each.
Safety Alarm - These Birdie alarms are great for on or off the trail. They can be used to warn animals and humans of your presence or deter attacks, as well as notify rescuers of your location if you end up lost on the trail.
Bug Repellent - Because bugs. Mosquitos, gnats, and ticks are some of the biggest pests on the trail. Wearing some form of protection is the only way to keep them out of your hair, literally. Linked is a vegan mosquito repellent by Meow Meow Tweet with great ratings. Check out some other vegan products while you are on the site!
Bear Bell - While hiking you are roaming through the front yard and back yard of hundreds of animals. Wearing a bear bell on your backpack will warn animals of your presence so you don't startle them.
Bear Spray - Even though a bear bell is a great tool, there is still a chance of an animal feeling uncomfortable with your presence. Bear repellent or mace will help defend you if you ever find yourself in that situation (but I hope not!).
First Aid Kit - About every hike I injure myself, I'm just super clumsy. Carrying a first aid kit is important for that reason. There are so many affordable options across the internet. I attached a link to My Medic - Solo. This kit is lightweight, compact, and water-resistant, so its perfect to pack for a hike!
Paracord Bracelet - These bracelets weren't created solely for looks, they are made for emergency situations. The paracord could be used to help start a fire or tie something. There is also a whistle, compass, fire rod and striker included.
Water Bottle - No matter how long you plan to hike, you should carry water with you. Many hikers opt for sustainable, reusable items because they are better for the environment. Hydro Flask is a favorite on the trail. They come in a bunch of sizes and color options, so there is a choice for everyone!
Chapstick - Wind, cold weather, and dry weather while hiking can cause chapped lips. My personal choice for chapstick is Burt's Bees, specifically the coconut & pear. They are natural, affordable, and come in all sorts of flavors.
Trail Journal - These are used to record your hikes and adventures. They are all different sizes and styles to choose from. Some come completely blank, while others have prompts for you to fill out. I linked to Etsy, where you can find one that can even be customized.
National Park Scratch Off - For friends and family that are attempting to hike each National Park, this is the perfect gift! Each time they visit a new park they can scratch the according spot. This gift is a fun and functional.
Reusable Snack Bags - These can be found in store or across the internet. They are a lightweight, sustainable gift for people who are eco-conscious and looking to reduce waste.
State Hiker Ornament - There are a ton of different ornaments to choose from, but I wanted to share this one. I love the raw steel state outlines with a hiker cut-out. Choose the state your giftee is from or a state they enjoy traveling to!
Personalized Trail Name Gift - A personalized trail sign is a fun gift for anyone. You can put their name or their favorite trail on the sign for them to hang proudly.
Hope you found list helpful and it can guide you towards the perfect gifts. Beyond this list are hundred of other ideas for hiking gifts. Checking out some hiking stores such as REI, Columbia, Dick's, Cabela's are great places to find other ideas.
