Bundle up & Hit the Trail: Five Winter Hiking Tips for New England

Winter in New England is a magical time of year, with snow-covered trails and cold air. But it can also be daunting for some hikers, especially those new to the area. In this blog you'll find some helpful tips and advice on staying safe and comfortable while winter hiking in New England.


  1. Dress in Layers Layering is important when hiking, doing it the correct way will keep you dry and warm while hiking in cold weather. Start off with a base layer of synthetic or wool material, add a mid-layer of fleece or wool, and top it off with a waterproof shell. Make sure to wear a hat and gloves, too!

  2. Bring the Right Gear Make sure you back the essentials for your winter hike. In the winter you'll want a pair of waterproof hiking boots, micro spikes or crampons, and snowshoes. A headlamp and extra batteries are also important in case you get stuck in the dark. You may not plan on hiking at night, but it could happen to anyone so better to be prepared.

  3. Know the Conditions Before you head out, check the weather and trail conditions. Make sure you know what to expect and plan accordingly.

  4. Stay Hydrated It’s easy to forget to drink water in cold weather, but it’s still important to stay hydrated. Bring along a water bottle or two and make sure to take drink breaks.   5. Be Prepared Tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return. Stay on the trail to avoid getting lost or injured. If you do happen to go off trail, retrace your steps. This is important for your survival, you don't want to waste the rest of your energy which is important to your survival.

Remember to dress in layers, bring plenty of water and snacks, and always tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
