Why is layering important for hiking?
Layering is important when hiking, doing it the correct way will keep you dry and warm. By layering you have the ability to adapt to your surroundings. As you start off you may be cool, but it's important to layer lightly. The rest of your layers should be carried in your pack. Your body will gradually warm up as you incline or add miles. As you reach the summit, when the temperatures drop, or weather changes, this is when you will add layers.
There are three main layers for hiking - base layer, mid layer, and outer layer.
Base Layer
When planning a day hike, it's crucial to pay attention to your base layer, it directly affects your comfort level during the hike. The base layer sits closest to your skin and has the primary responsibility of keeping you dry and comfortable. Choosing the right material is vital, and it's recommended to opt for clothing labeled as moisture-wicking or made from polyester and merino wool.
In addition to the material, the weight of the base layer is equally important. Lightweight base layers are perfect for warm weather hikes, while mid-weight ones work well for cooler climates.
When choosing your hiking clothing, be sure to avoid cotton. It may be comfortable and breathable for everyday wear, it's not suitable for hiking as it absorbs moisture and holds onto it, making you feel cold and uncomfortable. By preventing excessive sweating and moisture buildup, you can keep yourself warm and dry throughout your hike.

Keep in mind - the weight of the mid-layer affects its ability to keep you warm. Different weights are available, so choose one you feel comfortable with and provides enough heat to keep you warm. Layering is also an option, so don't be afraid to experiment with multiple layers to find the perfect combination for your comfort level.

The outer layer or shell, aka the final piece of the puzzle for a comfortable and enjoyable outdoor adventure. The outer layer is all about protecting you from the elements, whether it's rain, snow, or wind.
When it comes to the outer layer, there are so many options to choose from! You can choose waterproof shells, water-resistant shells, soft shells, breathable shells, or non-breathable shells. Each type of shell offers different benefits, so it's important to choose one that suits your needs and the conditions you'll be facing.
Here's the thing: the outer layer can be a bit pricier than the other layers. But trust me, it's worth it. Over time, I'd recommend investing in a few different shells so you have options depending on the weather conditions. Experiment with colors and styles to find a shell that reflects your personality and makes you feel great.

Accessories, my favorite part! When it comes to hiking clothing accessories, there are a few key items that can make all the difference.
First up, hats! A good hat protects your face from the sun or keeps your head warm when it's chilly outside. Plus, it's the perfect opportunity to rock a cute beanie or baseball cap.
Next - socks. Don't underestimate the power of a good pair of socks. They can prevent blisters, keep your feet warm and dry, and just make you feel more comfortable overall. And again, there are so many fun colors and patterns to choose from!
I know, gloves aren't the most exciting accessory, but they're crucial for keeping your hands warm and protected. They come in all sorts of materials and styles, so you can find a pair that suits your needs and your style.
Some other pieces to pack in case elements vary include a scarf, a mask, and goggles. A scarf or a buff is not just for fashion. When that wind hits you at the top of the mountain, you'll thank your lucky stars you brought one. A mask will will protect you from any pesky bugs or pollen, and in the winter or windy days it creates an extra layer of protection. Now, let's talk goggles. Yes, goggles! For when the trail gets dusty or when the sun is blinding you.. You could opt for sunglasses too.
