Look no further than Iceland in November! While some may shy away from traveling during the colder months, Iceland in November still has stunning natural beauty, unique attractions, and delicious cuisine. There's something for everyone in this magical country, let's explore some of the must-see places on this itinerary.
First, let's talk weather. It's true - Iceland in November can be chilly, with temperatures averaging around 35°F (2°C). But don't let that deter you! With the right clothing and gear, you can stay warm and comfortable while taking in the stunning landscapes. The best part, November is outside of the major tourist months, so you get to enjoy the scenery all to yourself!
Now, onto the fun stuff - what to do in Iceland in November! One of the main draws of visiting this time of year is the chance to see the Northern Lights. They can be seen from most places on the island. November is one of the best months for viewing, because the nights are long and dark. Head out of the city and away from any light pollution for the best chance of seeing the aurora borealis across the sky.
First stop on this trip - Selfoss. This charming town is the perfect base for exploring Iceland's famous Golden Circle. While this itinerary does go off the circle, some stops are still included. See the Kerid Crater, the Hveradalir Geothermal Area, and marvel at the the lava tunnel, Raufarhólshellir. Don't forget to take a dip in the nearby Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River!
Next up, Vik, a small coastal village home to some of Iceland's most iconic natural attractions. Explore the black sand beaches, towering cliffs, and the famous Reynisfjara sea stacks. Another must-see attraction is the stunning ice caves, like at Katla Ice Caves. These beautiful formations are only accessible during the winter months, when the ice is strong enough to support visitors. Take a guided tour to explore the magical blue and white caves, and be sure to bring your camera!
Continue to loop into Laugarvatn, a small town known for its geothermal hot springs and relaxing spa experiences. Take a dip in the warm waters of Fontana spa, and don't miss the chance to try rye bread that's been baked in the hot springs! This area is also home to Geysir, one of the world's most powerful geysers.
You will now head inland to Husafell, a hidden gem that's often overlooked. This peaceful town is the perfect base for exploring the stunning landscapes of Iceland's highlands. Take a hike to the nearby Langjökull glacier, visit the unique Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls, find a local farm to explore, and marvel at the natural beauty of the nearby lava fields.
Finally, no trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the vibrant capital city of Reykjavik. Explore the colorful buildings, art galleries, and museums that line the streets. Of course, no trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon. So while you are in the area, plan to make a trip there. It may be chilly outside, the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon are warm and inviting year-round. If you don't want to travel as far, the Secret Lagoon is just as nice!
Don't forget to indulge in Iceland's delicious cuisine! November is the perfect time to try traditional Icelandic dishes like Icelandic hot dogs, smoked lamb, seafood, and Skyr (a type of Icelandic yogurt). No meal is complete without a shot of Brennivín - Iceland's signature schnapps.
So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip to Iceland in November today! With its stunning natural beauty, unique attractions, and delicious cuisine, it's the perfect destination for an unforgettable vacation.
